Green Resource Program

You now have the opportunity to Go Green!
We’re now offering a program that will provide Ohio Edison Company, The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and The Toledo Edison Company customers with an opportunity to support alternative energy resources. The new Green Resource Program helps customers make a difference in the environment by supporting the companies’ purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that come from alternative energy sources of electric power generation, such as wind power or other alternative energy resource generators.

How does the program work?
We recently acquired the right to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and organize them into Green Product blocks. Each block costs $0.50 per month. Customers must agree to purchase at least two blocks of the Green Product.

For a minimum of only $1.00 per month (2 blocks at $0.50 each), customers can support the Green Resource Program. And for $5.00 per month (10 blocks), the Green Product monthly purchase represents 100 percent of an average residential customer's monthly usage. This is a voluntary program. Participation does not impact a customer’s current electricity service. We will continue to deliver electric power to the customer’s premises.

When customers purchase the Green Product blocks (maximum of 50 blocks per month per customer), they are supporting our acquisition of RECs. The cost of their purchase is in addition to their regular monthly electric bill. They will not receive any additional electricity from their purchase of the Green Product; however, they are helping to sustain a market for the environmental attributes of alternative sources of power generation.

What is a REC?
When an alternative energy generator – for example, a wind power or other alternative energy resource generator – produces one megawatt hour of electricity that is sold into the electricity market, it produces one REC.

How do customers enroll in the Green Resource Program?
Please note: Program eligibility is limited to customers who are current on payment of their electric bills. Customers on a Percentage of Income Payment Program (PIPP) are not eligible.
