Safe operations a priority

Safety is a core value at FirstEnergy and is an integral part of all our business activities. Practicing safety every day has brought our safety performance approaching the top-decile among similar-sized electric utilities. We are committed to helping our employees work safely each day and informing customers and the public about how to act safely and responsibly around electricity.

Training and support
We offer training and other support so that our employees are well-educated about safe operations in and away from the workplace. These include:

Training that is comprehensive, ongoing, and specialized, enabling our employees to identify and prevent at-risk situations. We ensure that employees are appropriately trained in procedures and work practices necessary for the safe performance of their jobs.
Promoting a work environment based on employee involvement, ownership, teamwork, education, training, and leadership. Employees take active roles in the safety process by participating in safety teams, meetings, audits, and hazard assessments.
Staffing safety and health professionals at each plant and operating company site to oversee employee safety and the local safety process. Workplace audits, hazard assessments, and maintaining high levels of good housekeeping help ensure a safe and healthy workplace.
Careful selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in conjunction with safe work practices, engineering controls, and guards helps protect and safeguard the health of our employees.
Helping employees adopt a safety-conscious lifestyle to prevent accidents at home, while on vacation, and traveling on company business.

FirstEnergy meets and/or exceeds regulatory requirements and provides both supervisory and field employees the necessary required training and resources to safely perform their work.

Corporate recognition of safety performance
FirstEnergy also sponsors a company-wide safety awards program that recognizes individual business units for significant achievements in safety performance.
