Get Help With...Saving Energy

Energy efficiency

Appliance manufacturers understand the importance of energy efficiency. Today's major appliances generally offer higher efficiency ratings than ever before. For that reason, it may be worthwhile to review the age and wattage of your appliances. You may be able to achieve significant energy savings simply by replacing some of the older, less efficient ones.

The bright yellow EnergyGuide labels on new major appliances allow you to compare the energy costs of similar appliances. The most efficient model might cost half as much to operate as one that's less efficient. An energy-saving model usually costs more to buy, but with its greater efficiency you'll save money over the life of the appliance. Although the dollar figures shown are only averages, EnergyGuide labels allow you to comparison shop based on operating cost, not just purchase price.

Energy Efficiency Rating (EER)

This special rating is shown on EnergyGuide labels for room air conditioners and Geothermal whole-house heating and cooling systems. Basically, the higher the EER the greater the efficiency of the unit.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER)

The SEER allows you to compare the efficiency of central air conditioning systems, heat pumps and add-on heat pumps in their cooling modes. Again, higher numbers indicate greater efficiency. We recommend looking for a SEER of 11.00 or higher.

ENERGY STARĀ®

The ENERGY STAR program can help you find products that use less energy. A collaboration among the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and companies like FirstEnergy, ENERGY STAR raises awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of energy-efficient products.

When shopping for appliances, look for the ENERGY STAR logo. It identifies energy-efficient appliances that exceed minimum federal standards for efficiency. The ENERGY STAR distinction can be found on qualifying furnaces, central and room air conditioners, heat pumps, refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes washers, televisions, DVDs, VCRs, computers, computer monitors ... and even homes.
